Weekend in NYC

Earlier this summer, Nate and I went up to New York City for the weekend.

(Williamsburg waterfront, facing Manhattan)

We drove up. It didn't take long at all! Three and a half hours, maybe.

We stayed in Williamsburg with generous friends, Joey and Ashley. Their place had lots of art; the rugs and tapestries were especially beautiful! I did a poor job taking pictures. So many of Nate! Oh well. Next time!

When we got there, we went to The Richardson, "a prohibition-style speakeasy", for a drink. All the bartenders wear white shirts and black suspenders, and are very curteous! I got a Jack Rose, and Nate got a Singapore Sling.

For dinner, Patrick suggested La Superior. What a good choice! There was a bit of a wait, so the boys skateboarded. You order a handful of small tacos with all different contents. I got fish, cochinita pibil (pork slow-cooked in banana leaves), and carne asada. They were all delicious!

The next morning, we got up early to go to the beach. We got subs to bring for lunch, and hit the road. It took about 45 minutes to get to...Fire Island! It was fun going over all the interconnected bays once we left Long Island. So many lighthouses!

We parked in the lot, and walked the long path to the beach, over so much poison ivy! Eek.

The sand was so nice, and there was nothing on the horizon. It was hard to believe we were so close to the busy city. We lounged, swam (a lot), and the boys played football until an older gentleman expressed his displeasure.

We picked an interesting spot: right between a family beach, and a clothing optional beach! Nate and I took a walk along the latter. With our clothes on.

A big, dessicated skate. Cool!

When we had our fill, we packed up, and went back. Nate and I walked around Williamsburg for a while, and took in the sights. We were there during Feast, so we walked through the carnival!

We decided to grill at Patrick's house, because he has a great backyard (after a lot of work!), with 3 chickens and a bench swing. We stopped at The Brooklyn Kitchen / The Meat Hook (um, really cool) to get things for dinner, including delicious cheese and bacon rillette. Mmm!

The next morning, we got up early and walked down to the waterfront. It was so nice.

After breakfast with Joey and Ashley at The Blue Stove, we hopped in the car and headed back to Baltimore. Writing this makes me want to go back ASAP!
